Our mission is to offer affordable craft coffee and genuine hospitality, extending apprenticeships to those aging out of the foster care system. We will cultivate a space that feels like home, by loving our neighbors as ourselves.

Our Story.
In 2020 we began the process to become a license foster family in hopes of adopting one day. In February of 2021 we were licensed and in March we welcomed our first emergency placement, a very scared little five year old who was homeless with his mom. It wasn’t hard to fall in love with his sweet heart. Unfortunately, there was no way for reunification, but we selfishly were okay with that. We started the adoption process as soon as we could and in March of 2023 we officially became a family of 5.
We share our story because it’s what has led us here! We learned the harsh realities that thousands of children face and we can’t ignore them! Specifically, those aging out of the foster care system. Support is limited and at least half find themselves on a trajectory of homelessness and crime.
With that in mind, paired with a deep love for coffee and hospitality, Neighbors was born. Our family, with a committed team of people, will be opening a nonprofit coffee shop in our neighborhood in the spring of 2024. One of our defining missions will be to offer a paid apprenticeship for those aging out of the foster care system. Our aim is to build them up and eventually launch them out with a strong foundation. This pathway will include interview guidance, resume building, communication coaching, and more. All while creating a safe space for learning, growing, and friendship.

Neighbors is a community with the common values of hospitality, intentionality, creativity, and rest. We desire Neighbors to be an extension of our homes and hearts. Being a people overflowing with kindness and warmth for all who walk through our doors.
Our Neighborhood.
Marlborough is the Neighborhood that our team lives in and loves dearly. Once a thriving part of South KC has gone downhill in many ways. In 2008 a coalition was born to bring life back into the community but they have faced many challenges. Over the years Marlborough has seen great progress in revitalization but there’s still much work to be done.
